Projekt Kadu wystartował w 2001 roku jako prosta wersja testowa KDE API. Z czasem stał się najbardziej popularnym klientem Gadu-Gadu dla systemów Unikowych).
Kadu bazuje na bibliotece Qt w wersji 3.x. Od wersji 0.3.3 nie wymaga bibliotek K Desktop Environment i może być uruchamiany za pomocą innych menadżerów okien. Obsługuje Gnome i Window Makera. Rdzeniem Kadu jest biblioteka libgadu.
